Doctors, Teachers, And Parents Observe The Development

Doctors, teachers, and parents observe the development of their child or several children. Some professions address one area more than others, but all areas of development effect each other. I will be analyzing Sophia, a 3-year, 7 month old child. Sophia participates in dance class and attends daycare. She has one younger sister, who is 9 months old, and married parents. Sophia began waling at 12 months old. According to the article, â€Å"Baby Milestone: Walking,† by the Baby Center, babies typically begin walking between 9 and 12 months (1). Sophia was at the end of the typical timing. This could be due to a lack of motivation because she was an only child, so she did not have an older sibling to motivate her to explore her environment and†¦show more content†¦Next, Sophia exhibits memories quite often. For example, Sophia and I were playing with the dolls, Elsa and Ana, from the movie, â€Å"Frozen,† I was Ana and she was Elsa. Sophia asked, â€Å"What happ ened to your hair?† I responded by saying, â€Å"I don’t know, can you tell me?† She explained it was because she (Elsa) struck me (Ana) with magic and made part of it white, which is exactly what happened. This behavior shows a surfeit of cognitive development. First, Sophia is in the preoperational stage of Piaget’s theory. According to, â€Å"Preoperational Stage,† by Saul McLeod, Sophia is pretend playing and using animism because she is giving an inanimate object, human like characteristics (17). Sophia is also using centration by only focusing on one aspect of the doll, which is the white streak of hair (Bukatko 282). If she did not have the ability to use centration, she would have mentioned the white streak, but also have mentioned another aspect of the doll, such as her dress. These are all characteristics of the preoperational stage. Sophia has also demonstrated her growing attention span. A 3 year olds attention span should be approximately 8.17 seconds (â€Å"The Last† 49). A few months ago, she could not sit down and read an entire book. Recently, I read two books to Sophia and she sat quietly, asked her own questions, and answered questions about the story.
