An Inspector Calls Essay Example for Free
An Inspector Calls Essay Miss Sheila Birling, a prominent character in Priestlys play An Inspector Calls, undergoes many changes throughout the play. The audience and readers perspective towards her also alters. Sheila changes before our eyes from a little girl into a strong young woman. In the beginning, Sheila is described to us as being in her early twenties and very pleased with life. This gives us an impression that she is just a girl, who has not seen enough of the world yet and is very young in her thoughts. We see her as being very immature at first, addressing her parents as Mummy and Daddy. She is clearly a mummys girl who follows her parents instructions and orders For example, she meekly follows her mother to the drawing-room and leaves the men including her husband-to-be. Although she is engaged to Gerald Croft, Sheila places her husband-to-be on a pedestal, admiring him and calling h9im darling. She takes the engagement ring like a little girl would receive a new toy look, mummy! The way Sheila acts in the first part of the play makes her seem like someone who is soft, innocent and silly, or plain immature. After the Inspector arrives, our opinion towards her changes. After she confesses to the Inspector, Sheila breaks down. She feels very sorry for all the pain she has caused Eva Smith. The Inspector makes her feel responsible for using her wealth, importance and influence to get a truly innocent girl sacked from her last steady job. Sheila sobs and cries, like a child. However, our opinion really changes when she confronts Gerald. Sheila laughs hysterically, at the end of Act One, when she says, You fool. Of course he knows. And I hate to think what he knows that we dont know yet. This behaviour is rather like that of a teenager throwing a tantrum, showing her growing realisation and maturity. When Gerald begins to confess, Sheila shows a rebellious streak. She refuses to be led away by her parents who want her to be protected. This is like what the average adolescent would do when they wish to cross new territory. Sheila begins to control herself a little more rationally during Geralds interrogation Gerald falls off the high placing he was originally on as Sheila calls him by name rather than by some playful nickname.

I was also to determine the training objectives for the staff to increase their current set of skills. For the current report I had to do the skills audit. I also had do the secondary and primary research for internal and external environment. For this purpose I have used a number of web sites and books. About the restaurant: Chutney Mary- Londons most fashionable and highly acclaimed Indian restaurant and twice received the award of Best Indian Restaurant in the UK from the authoritative Good Curry Guide. The skills required by the staff to accomplish the companys future plans are shown in the fifth column. The chart gives a synopsis to the manger of the areas that need to be develop, in order to reach the companys goal. One of the ways to solve the problem is by gap analysis or impact analysis. Mina Loy as the Modern Woman Essay -- Biography Biographies Essays
Mina Loy as the Modern Woman Born on December 27, 1882, into an ordinary London family, Mina Lowy proved to be anything but common. After spending years as the recipient of her fatherââ¬â¢s encouragement, Loy moved from the artistic confinement that her mother tried to impose upon her to a life of literary acclaim. Developing her artistic crafts of painting, sculpture, and poetry, her most recognized talent, Mina Loy refused to be crowded into convenient societal definitions. Hailed as the quintessential ââ¬Å"New Womanâ⬠in 1917, Loy embodied the changing definition of modern femininity. As an adolescent, Loy often clashed with her mother, Julia, as she strove to improve her craft. She yearned to fully express herself artistically, through her painting and her literature, yet her mother discouraged her, wishing for her daughter to conform to the tradition expectations for a girl in British society. Mina later said: In the sheltered homes of the nineties, daughters were bullied to maturity, subject to prohibitions unmodified since babyhood. Their only self expression: to watch and pray (Burke, 32). Loy was forced to fight for any chance to study her crafts, as her mother was not an advocate for female education. After winning the battle against her motherââ¬â¢s repression, with her fatherââ¬â¢s help and encouragement, Loy entered the Kunstlerrinen Verein Art Academy in Munich, where she excelled under the tutelage of Angelo Jank. Carolyn Burke wrote that, for Loy, leaving England at the turn of the century meant escaping from the repressive forces embodied by her mother: the complacency of British culture, its contradictory goals for daughters, and the constrain... ...friends enjoyed eluded her, Loyââ¬â¢s work continues to stand as an expression of changing female modernity. As the New Woman, Loy was independent, confident, and undaunted by those who claimed her work was merely scandalous and pornographic. Mina Loy's life story and the story of her work is a complicated one, as Loy seemed to epitomize her age at the same time that she eluded it (Weiner). Her work paved new literary paths and with her sexual and experimental style she altered what was accepted and expected from female writers. As the modern era faded, the definition of the New Woman continued to change, and like both Loy and her poetry, continued to escape classification. http://www.the-artists.org/ArtistView.cfm?id=8A01F8F4-BBCF-11D4-A93500D0B7069B40 http://www.poets.org/poets/poets.cfm?prmID=96 http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/g_l/loy/loy.htm

American History :: essays research papers fc
ââ¬Å"The very purpose of a Bill of Rights was to withdraw certain subjects from the vicissitudes of political controversy, to place them beyond the reach of majorities and officials and to establish them as legal principles to be applied by the courts. Oneââ¬â¢s right to life, liberty, and property, to free speech, a free press, freedom of worship and assembly, and other fundamental rights may not be submitted to vote; they depend on the outcome of no elections.â⬠ââ¬â Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government interference into public affairs. Freedom of expression consists of the rights to freedom of speech, press, assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and belief. The Court has interpreted the First Amendment to apply to the entire federal government even though itââ¬â¢s only supposed to be applied to the Congress. The First Amendment was written because at America's beginning, citizens ordered to have a guarantee of their basic freedoms. Without the First Amendment, religious minorities could be persecuted, the government might well establish a national religion, protesters could be silenced, the press could not criticize government, and citizens couldnââ¬â¢t assemble for social change. Most people believe in the right to free speech, but debate whether it should cover flag-burning, hard-core rap and heavy-metal lyrics, tobacco advertising, hate speech, pornography, nude dancing, solicitation and various forms of symbolic speech; though many would agree to limiting some forms of free expression. A Phrase that is often used to describe expression that is combined with elements of conduct is ââ¬Å"Symbolic Expressionâ⬠. The Supreme Court has dealt with a series of cases and has made it clear that symbolic expression or expressive conduct may be protected by the First Amendment. There have been a plethora of cases on this issue and they have been extremely controversial. One remarkable one was Texas vs. Johnson in 1984 during a Republican National Convention; it was about a man who expressed his displeasure with the United States by burning an American Flag. This action of his took Gregory Johnson to court and the court came to a conclusion that burning the flag was ââ¬Å"speechâ⬠and again determined that Johnson was only trying to send out a message through his perspective by the burning the flag.
Capitalism & Socialism
A Better Change in Society Socialism and Capitalism are two different types of government. Socialism is the society were the government takes care of all individuals. There is no personal responsibility and the government owns everything but most personal freedoms are gone. Capitalism is an economical system in which wealth and the productions of wealth are privately owned and controlled rather than being state owned and controlled. Socialism critiqued capitalism for being an unfair economic structure. Before Socialism, the government was not engaged with the people, products and businesses, and taxes and classes were all functioning differently wen Capitalism was in play. What Capitalism really involves of is laissez faire, which means to let it be. In capitalism, the means of production is owned, ran, and traded for the purpose of making profits for private owners. Capitalismsââ¬â¢ importance is on individual profit instead of workers or society as a whole. However, on the Sociali sm side, all people should be given an equal opportunity to succeed and workers should have more rights and treated better. Socialism emphasis more on profits being distributed among the society to receiving a better wage. Capitalism was a time where government did not do much and let individuals to own their factories, houses, goods, etc. and put their own prices on them. Production are privately owned and used for a private profit. This gives motivations for producers to engage in economic activity.Once Socialism came to be, government began to act and the productions became socially owned with the surplus value produced increasing to either all of society or to all the workers of the business. The economy back in Capitalism was not very stable. Employment with low wages was affecting everyone except the rich. In socialism, there are the rich, middle and lower classes, but in capitalism there is no class that does not have its basic needs encountered. In this type of government th e rich, middle and lower classes are taxed depending on their salary, the more money made the more the tax.Taxes benefit the people and are used to support any of there programs and Capitalism has similar traits. However, in Capitalism it was more of a support to the rich only. The rich individuals goal for their business is maximizing wealth or the price of the stock of the business in order to make owners as wealthy as possible just like a free market economy, but does not befit the lower classes at all. In the Socialists point of view, Capitalism was considered an unfair form of government.Capitalism interested more on individualsââ¬â¢ own wealth, goods, and profits, which only benefited the rich class while the middle and lower class, had to work very hard to be able to get their money. That is why Socialism started and made everything equal for everyone. The rich were taxed more so that it would be fair any wasted the same as what a middle or lower class would waste. An impo rtant part of Socialism was that government had been more into their society and now government began to own factories, houses, and property and put it cost on it and nobody owned anything without government being engaged. William Blake
Name: Brandon Clark William Blake was born in London on November 28, 1757, Blake passed away on 12 August 1827. James Hess father, a hosier, and Catherine Blake Hess mother. Two of his six siblings died in infancy. From early childhood, Blake spoke of having visions at four he saw God ââ¬Å"put his head to the windowâ⬠; around age nine, while walking through the countryside, he saw a tree filled with angels. Although his parent's tried to discourage him from ââ¬Å"lying,â⬠they did observe that he was different from his peers and did not force him to attend conventional school. He learned to read and write at mom. At age ten, Blake expressed a wish to become a painter, so his parent's sent him to drawing school. Two years later, Blake began writing poetry. When he turned fourteen, he apprenticed with an engraver because art school proved too costly. One of Flake's assignments as apprentice was to sketch the tombs at Westminster Abbey, exposing him to a variety of Gothic s tyles from which he would draw inspiration throughout his career. After his seven-year term ended, he studied briefly at the Royal Academy.Flake's first printed work, Poetical Sketches (1783), is a collection of apprentice verse, costly imitating classical models. The poems protest against war, tyranny, and King George Ills treatment of the American colonies. William Blake and his works have been extensively discussed and criticized over the twentieth and now this century, until then he was barely known. He started to become more popular around 1863 with Alexander Gilchrest biography ââ¬Å"Lifeâ⬠and only fully appreciated and recognized at the beginning of the twentieth century. It seems his art had been too adventurous and unconventional for the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, maybe you could even say he was ahead of his time? Either way, today he is a hugely famous figure of Romantic literature, whose work is open to various interpretations, which has been know n to take a lifetime to establish. As well as his works being difficult to interpret, him as a person has also provoked much debate.Henry Crab Robinson, who was a diarist and friend of Flake's at the end of his life asked the question many students of Blake are still unable to conclusively answer: In his life, Blake rejected conventional religion. His poems are influenced by this. Blake wrote a poem called ââ¬ËThe Little Black Boy' ââ¬ËMy mother bore me in the southern wild, And I am black, but O! My soul is white; White as an angel is the English child: But I am black as if bereaved of light. My mother taught me underneath a tree And sitting down before the heat of day, She took me on her lap and kissed me, And pointing to the east began to say.Look on the rising sun: there God does live And gives his light, and gives his heat away. And flowers and trees and beasts and men receive Comfort in morning Joy in the noonday. And we are put on earth a little space, That we may learn to bear the beams of love, And these black bodies and this sun-burnt face Is but a cloud, and like a shady grove. For when our souls have learned the heat to bear The cloud will vanish we shall hear his voice. Saying: come out from the grove my love & care, And round my golden tent like lambs rejoice. Thus did my mother say and kissed me, And thus I say to little English boy. When I from black and he from white cloud free, And round the tent of God like lambs we Joy: Ill shade him from the heat till he can bear, To lean in Joy upon our fathers knee. And then I'll stand and stroke his silver hair, And be like him and he will then love me. ââ¬Ë Summary: A black child tells the story of how he came to know his own identity and to now God. The boy, who was born in ââ¬Å"the southern wildâ⬠of Africa, first explains that though his skin is black his soul is as white as that of an English child. He relates how his loving mother taught him about God who lives in the East, who gives light and life to all creation and comfort and Joy to men. ââ¬Å"We are put on earth,â⬠his mother says, to learn to accept God's love. He is told that his black skin ââ¬Å"is but a cloudâ⬠that will be dissipated when his soul meets God in heaven. The black boy passes on this lesson to an English child, explaining that his white skin is likewise a cloud. He vows that hen they are both free of their bodies and delighting in the presence of God, he will shade his white friend until he, too, learns to bear the heat of God's love. Then, the black boy says, he will be like the English boy, and the English boy will love him. Shows the conflict between races in religion, suggesting that people of black nationality are of a lesser standard and inferior to whites; throughout the poem the black boy is comparing himself to the white child and wanting to be friends. This Poem has several techniques a few being Rhyme (ABA), personification example of this is when he sass ââ¬Å"for when our souls have learnedâ⬠. Metaphor an example of metaphor is shown when he writes ââ¬Å"And I am black, but O!
